In Dubai’s dynamic business environment two-thirds of the market operates at a loss, generating no profit.
Yet, some entrepreneurs rise above the challenges, creating phenomenally successful ventures. Today, I want to share the story of one such entrepreneur who launched the UAE’s fastest-growing coffee chain in 2021. I had the privilege of speaking with Konstantin Harbuz, the visionary behind Roasters Specialty Coffee, which has emerged as the leading coffee chain in the region.
Revolutionizing Dubai’s Premium Coffee Market
“This is my twelfth year in Dubai, and the market has undergone tremendous changes during this time,” Konstantin reflects. Before founding Roasters, he managed a national food distribution company. Later, he redirected his focus to his lifelong passion: premium coffee.
“We don’t just make espresso or cappuccino,” he explains. “Our product is a beverage to be savored for half an hour, much like a glass of fine wine.” This philosophy sets Roasters apart from traditional coffee shops prioritizing speed and standardization over quality and experience.
Mastering the Art of Creating a Unique Product
Today, Roasters boasts the most extensive selection of high-quality coffees in the GCC region. The company collaborates directly with the Cup of Excellence winners, a prestigious international competition that identifies the world’s finest coffee lots.

“Some of the lots we purchase are so rare that their annual global production doesn’t exceed 500 kilograms,” Konstantin shares. For instance, the iconic Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee — renowned as one of the world’s finest varieties — is predominantly (90%) reserved for Japan through government contracts. Roasters secures a portion of the remaining 10% thanks to strong industry relationships and a commitment to paying premium prices for unparalleled quality.
Impressive Financial Performance and Growth
In 2024, Roasters achieved remarkable milestones:
- Welcoming over 400,000 visitors
- Selling more than 100,000 cups of cappuccino
- Delivering 40,000 cheesecakes
- Sustaining steady traffic growth without active marketing
Educating the Market and Cultivating Coffee Culture
“We don’t just sell coffee — we cultivate a culture of coffee appreciation,” Konstantin explains. Roasters placessignificant emphasis on introducing customers to unique coffee varieties.
Take, for example, Watermill, an exceptional Colombian microlot that showcases the region’s diversity. With its expressive flavor profile, this coffee has earned acclaim among industry professionals. Unlike commercial lots shipped in bulk, specialty microlots like Watermill are produced in quantities as small as 500 kilograms per year. This exclusivity enables meticulous quality control and allows Roasters to unlock each bean’s full potential.

A Bold Vision: Launching a Coffee Hub
In 2025, Roasters plans to launch an ambitious project at Dubai Science Park: a state-of-the-art coffee hub spanning two floors. This multifunctional space will feature:
- A professional roastery with expanded production capacity
- An organic farm for growing fresh ingredients
- An education center offering barista training programs
- A cupping studio for professional tastings
- A cutting-edge podcast and photo studio
- Over 200 restaurant seats
Building a Multicultural Team and Scaling Operations
Team-building is a cornerstone of Roasters’ success. “In Dubai, it’s essential to consider cultural and mental differences when assembling a team,” Konstantin emphasizes. He highlights the importance of fostering a unified corporate culture that aligns people from diverse backgrounds with shared values and goals.
“You can’t just mechanically gather individuals from different cultures—you need to create an environment where everyone feels part of something greater,” he notes. This philosophy is particularly critical in the UAE, where long-term labor contracts are the norm.
Roasters is rapidly expanding its footprint across the UAE, solidifying its position as the market leader in its segment. The company’s growth isn’t driven by expansion for its own sake, but by the desire to create a comprehensive ecosystem around coffee culture.

Key Principles for Success in Dubai’s Business Landscape
From Roasters’ journey, several critical success factors emerge:
- Focus on the Premium Segment: In an oversaturated market, the company carved out a niche by targeting premium coffee, avoiding competition in the mass-market segment.
- Vertical Integration: By managing every aspect of the business—from sourcing rare coffee beans to in-house production and educational programs — Roasters ensures consistent quality at every step.
- Organic Growth: Rather than relying on aggressive marketing and the oversaturation of infotainment already prevalent in the market, the focus is placed on product and service quality. This approach ensures the sustainable growth of a customer-oriented business.
A Glimpse into the Future
“A quality product will always find its consumer,” Konstantin asserts confidently. The upcoming launch of the coffee hub represents more than just an expansion of the business — it marks the creation of a new cultural phenomenon in Dubai. This innovative space aims to bring together coffee industry professionals, passionate enthusiasts, and everyday lovers of premium coffee.
Roasters’ journey proves that even in Dubai’s fiercely competitive market, it is possible to build a thriving business. The keys to success lie in a profound understanding of the product, unwavering passion for the craft, and an uncompromising commitment to high-quality standards. True success does not favor those chasing quick profits but rewards those focusing on delivering genuine value to their customers. Was the publication interesting and useful?
