Dubai completes first crewed flight of an electric air taxi

The emirate has completed a test flight with a crew on board between Al Maktoum International Airport and a landing pad near the Marmoom desert reserve. The vertical takeoff and landing were successfully performed on equipment jointly operated by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority and the California based company Joby Aviation. Officials called the test the first of its kind in the region and a significant milestone in implementing Dubai’s future transport strategy.

The test flight took place on the eve of the Dubai Airshow, which opened on Monday, as the UAE plans to launch passenger flying taxi services as early as next year. The Roads Authority announced that the first vertiport is now 60 percent complete. The hub will be located near Dubai International Airport and connected to three other sites in partnership with Emaar, Atlantis The Royal and Wasl.

New vertiports are also under construction at the Zabeel parking area near Dubai Mall, at the Atlantis The Royal hotel on Palm Jumeirah and at the American University in Dubai.

According to the emirate’s media office, flying taxis will cut travel time between the international airport and the Palm from 45 minutes by road to 10 minutes by air, dramatically reshaping mobility for high-income residents and tourists.

Infrastructure expands in parallel with technology trials

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority, called the completion of the first crewed electric air taxi flight a new milestone in the emirate’s history of leadership and innovation. His statement came amid active development of national infrastructure for electric vertical takeoff and landing services. Abu Dhabi alone is planning ten vertiports at key locations including Zayed International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport.

Comparing the pace of these developments with what is seen in the Dubai real estate market latest news, it becomes clear that both sectors are experiencing an investment boom and accelerated construction to meet rising demand.Proximity to vertiports is already emerging as a pricing factor for premium property, much like metro access influenced apartment values in the previous decade.

Joby Aviation targets broad Gulf region presence

Joby Aviation aims for a strong presence in the Gulf region for commercial passenger services. In November, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation announced plans to deploy Joby’s electric air taxis in the kingdom rapidly. The company has already identified the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan as key markets for air taxi services, which have long been discussed as a potential solution to urban congestion.

Joby plans to deploy 200 aircraft in Saudi Arabia

JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby, highlighted the company’s work with the US Federal Aviation Administration since 2016 on certification and commercial flight operations. These standards now apply globally, simplifying expansion thanks to unified safety requirements. The company’s plans in Saudi Arabia include:

  • Deployment of 200 aircraft worth about USD 1 billion
  • Launch of commercial operations following regulatory approvals
  • Creation of route networks between key business hubs
  • Integration with existing transport infrastructure

Joby has entered the final phase of FAA Type Certification for its aircraft in the US. The regulatory process includes pilot operated tests of performance and safety aimed at creating global certification standards for advanced air mobility.

Archer Aviation, another primary eVTOL developer, has also completed its test campaign ahead of launch in the UAE. Testing of its Midnight aircraft included vertical takeoffs, transition manoeuvres and wing-borne flight in local desert operating conditions. The tests were conducted in close coordination with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre, and the operational partner, Abu Dhabi Aviation.

For property owners, apartment maintenance Dubai costs may soon include new service categories related to vertiport access if developers decide to integrate landing pads into residential communities. Premium developments are already considering this feature as a competitive advantage for attracting affluent residents who value time savings.

The rise of the air taxi industry is triggering a chain reaction across related sectors – from infrastructure construction to pilot and technician training. The UAE is positioning itself as a global testbed for future technologies, attracting eVTOL manufacturers with the opportunity to execute projects rapidly, supported by strong government backing and a robust regulatory environment.
