Emirates has invested AED 85 million in installing facial recognition biometric systems at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. More than 200 cameras equipped with facial recognition technology are now operating at key passenger service points — from check-in to boarding.
The new system allows travelers to move through checkpoints without repeatedly presenting their passports or boarding passes. Passengers register in the system once, after which the cameras identify their faces at all stages: during check-in, immigration control, entry to Emirates business lounges, and boarding. The airline expects the technology to reduce waiting times and increase overall passenger processing efficiency.
The project was implemented in partnership with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFAD). The collaboration began in 2017, and the new system represents the result of years of work integrating biometric data into airport processes.

How the registration works
Passengers can register in several ways:
- Through the Emirates mobile app
- At self-service kiosks in the airport
- At Emirates check-in counters
Both UAE residents and international visitors can register. The only requirements are to be a member of Emirates Skywards and to provide consent for the use of biometric data stored in the GDRFAD database. For those who have previously visited Dubai or hold a residence visa, Emirates can link their data to an existing GDRFAD profile upon consent. New visitors create a temporary biometric record that is updated upon entry to the UAE.
