European woman to pay 15,000 dirhams for stealing gold necklace in Dubai

The Dubai Misdemeanour and Violations Court has fined a European tourist for stealing a gold necklace from a jewellery store in March this year. The woman must pay a fine of 5,000 dirhams and compensation to the owner of 10,000 dirhams — the cost of the stolen jewellery.

The story began when the salesman noticed the necklace was missing immediately after the customer’s visit. The man did not hesitate and reviewed the CCTV footage. The footage showed the woman putting the item in her bag and hurriedly leaving the shop. The manager immediately contacted the police.

Surveillance cameras and quick police work solved the case

The police identified the suspect using the car’s license plate. The arrest happened quickly — Dubai’s CCTV system is so effective that it’s almost impossible to get away with anything. This applies not only to shopping centres but also to residential complexes, where every professional property management company monitors the safety of residents around the clock.

During questioning, the woman admitted that she had taken the necklace but insisted that she had no criminal intent. According to her, she was going to buy the jewellery, but at that moment she received news of her sister’s death and, in a state of shock, left the shop, forgetting the necklace in her bag.

The defence lawyer asked the court to acquit his client, citing emotional distress. However, the judge rejected this argument. The court’s decision stated: “The defendant’s behaviour and the circumstances of the case indicate full awareness of her actions.” CCTV footage conclusively proved her intention to commit theft.

The sentence is harsh but fair by Emirati standards

The woman was fined 5,000 dirhams, plus compensation of 10,000 dirhams to the shop owner. The total amount is 15,000 dirhams for a few minutes of rash actions. The figure looks impressive, especially given current gold prices in the emirate.

The theft occurred at a time when the price of the precious metal is rising at a record pace:

  • The price of a gram of 22-carat gold rose by 15.25 dirhams in eight days.
  • The current price is 391.25 dirhams, compared to 376 dirhams a week ago.
  • The world price has exceeded $3,500 per ounce.
  • Forecasts indicate that it will reach $3,600 before March.

Buyers in the UAE are reacting to the price surge in different ways. Some are switching to lighter jewellery, while others are investing in digital gold. Instalment plans with higher payments are gaining popularity — instead of paying 1,000 dirhams a month, people are paying 2,000 to 3,000 dirhams to get the desired amount of gold by the end of the year. The story of the stolen necklace echoes how Abu Dhabi real estate news today covers security issues. CCTV cameras have become standard not only for retail outlets but also for residential areas. Attempting to commit theft in Dubai virtually guarantees arrest and a hefty fine. A European tourist found this out the hard way.
