Weekly digest: Dubai – the world’s dirtiest city and the International Chamber

Дайджест за неделю: Дубай

Summarising the news from 8 to 14 November, it is clear that the UAE real estate market continues to attract international capital, but environmental challenges are reminding everyone that rapid growth comes with a price. The first half of November brought contrasting updates – from alarming ecological indicators to impressive business activity.

Dubai’s air becomes more dangerous than Beijing’s

On the morning of 5 November, Dubai ranked third globally for the worst air quality. The AQI index rose above 216 points – a level classified as “very unhealthy.” Only Kolkata scored higher with 237, and Beijing matched Dubai at 216.

The sharp deterioration was caused by the accumulation of dust and emissions due to weak winds and temperature inversion. PM2.5 concentrations exceeded safe limits several times over, posing particular risk to children, older people and people with chronic conditions.

The problem is systemic. In 2024, Dubai’s average PM2.5 concentration reached 33.5 μg/m³ – 6.7 times above the WHO guideline. Pollution is generated by two primary sources: natural dust storms and human activities such as vehicle traffic, industrial emissions, and construction dust. Even though UAE real estate news today, Dubai, Abu Dhabi property, often highlights the growth of new developments and infrastructure projects, the reality is that increased construction activity, cement production, and roadworks add more dust particles and pollutants to the air.

Dubai International Chamber attracts 261 companies in nine months

The Dubai International Chamber published its performance results for the first nine months of 2025. From January to September, the chamber brought 261 companies to Dubai – a 65 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. Among them were 44 multinational corporations, up 10 percent year on year. Small and medium enterprises showed an 84 percent surge, rising from 118 to 217 companies.

During the nine months, the chamber opened five new international offices in Dhaka, Cape Town, Bengaluru, Bangkok and Toronto. The expanding global network plays a key role in positioning Dubai as an international business hub. In the same period, the overseas offices organised 376 roundtables to promote the emirate and attract foreign direct investment.

Eco city in the desert becomes platinum partner of major content summit

The Sustainable City in Dubai joined the fourth edition of the 1 Billion Followers Summit as a platinum partner. The event will take place from 9 to 11 January 2026 under the theme “Content for Good.” The partnership gives content creators access to environmental narratives through an audience of more than one billion followers.

The growing demand for eco-friendly housing is reflected in property data: buyers increasingly choose developments with low operating costs, thanks to solar energy and green infrastructure.

Property owners in such communities save on maintenance, as property maintenance hourly rates in sustainable developments tend to be lower due to energy-efficient systems and well-planned infrastructure that requires fewer repairs and less servicing.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai join forces to regulate oil and gas trade

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy signed a memorandum of understanding during ADIPEC 2025. The agreement covers monitoring of liquefied petroleum gas and diesel fuel and includes the development of unified licensing procedures. The memorandum establishes a framework to simplify regulatory processes for the trade, storage, and transportation of petroleum products. Companies benefit from unified licensing that reduces time and costs when applying for permits across emirates, while regulator coordination eliminates duplicate inspections.

The first half of November illustrated a contradictory picture. On one hand, impressive numbers of new companies and ambitious sustainability projects. On the other, troubling air quality indicators reminding everyone of the cost of rapid urbanisation.
